Urinary tract obstruction:
It is a congenital malformation in the urinary tract that hinders the normal flow of urine, leading to urine reflux and swelling of the kidneys and bladder.
The most affected age group:
Newborns.
Symptoms of urinary tract obstruction:
The mother can notice the symptoms, such as the inability to urinate or very weak urine flow, hematuria, and pain during urination.
Complications of urinary tract obstruction:
• Urinary tract infection.
• Permanent kidney damage due to urine reflux.
Treatment of urinary tract obstruction:
First: When the condition is detected before birth:
• When the fetus is in the mother's womb, the problem may resolve without treatment.
• In some cases, such as fetal lung hypoplasia, the absence of amniotic fluid, or kidney damage, medical intervention is necessary. A diversion is made in the bladder to help the urine flow into the amniotic sac.
Second: If the deformity is discovered after birth, the following steps must be taken:
• Administering antibiotics to the child to prevent urinary tract infections.
• If the problem does not resolve by itself after birth, Dr. Wael Ghanem performs surgery to remove the obstruction and correct the urinary tract.
• A stent can also be inserted in the ureter or urethra to keep them open until the wound heals completely.
• If the cause is neurological, intermittent catheterization is used to empty the bladder.
